Abstract:
Bodies of water play a key role in the dynamism of the urban environment, involving
different functions and dimensions, and contributing to the friendly relationship between man
and the presence of water within the urban configuration. However, because of the occupation
and densification of the riverside areas, many problems of environmental degradation have
arisen, which contributes to the loss of the identity of urban rivers. From this perspective, the
general objective of this research is to evaluate the spatial and visual integration of the Rosa
Mística Community with the Piabas Creek in the city of Campina Grande, using the approach
of Space Syntax Theory. The methodological process took place in three stages. Firstly,
primary and secondary data were collected and selected. Georeferenced maps were then
drawn up using techniques available in specific software, such as Qgis and Google Earth
Pro.The first stage was a configurational analysis, carrying out Angular Segment Analysis and
interpolation of Spatial Integration values; and Visual Graph Analysis. The second stage
consisted of behavioral analysis, drawing up a questionnaire that was applied in the Rosa
Mística Community and tabulating the data. The third and final stage involved combining the
previous results to assess the community's spatial integration with the Piabas Creek. The
results made it possible to identify that the Rosa Mística Community has low levels of global
and local integration, and low levels of local and global choice, in relation to the stretch of the
creek inserted into the community. There were high levels of visibility in some areas close to
the body of water, favoring its connectivity and visual integration with those who travel
through the area. However, in other areas, environmental degradation and the presence of
irregular occupations on the banks of the body of water end up hindering physical and visual
accessibility to the creek. In addition, the majority of residents reported that they no longer
appreciate the place where they live. It can therefore be concluded that the low physical and
visual integration of the Rosa Mística Community with the Piabas Creek harms its residents'
relationship with the body of water.
