Resumo:
The present work has as its theme the process of rural electrification in the district of Várzea
Comprida dos Leites, in Pombal, in the state of Paraíba, between 1982 and 2022. Várzea
Comprida dos Leites is a rural district belonging to the city of Pombal, from which we will
analyze how experiences and forms of socialization before and after the arrival of electricity.
The objective is to problematize the impacts caused on the daily lives of residents of the
aforementioned community by the rural electrification process. Electrical energy was,
historically, a prime factor for the modernization and urbanization of cities to occur, allowing
new inventions to be introduced, producing effects on the way of thinking and observing the
world around them and, mainly, modifying urban space. We analyzed the rural electrification
process in the district, questioning the extent to which the lives of these people from Pombal
were impacted by the arrival of electricity in 1982. To this end, the first documentary analysis
was carried out based on the minutes of the Pombal City Council meetings, in order to monitor
how the electrification process was discussed by the municipality. Next, an analysis of oral
sources took place, from the perspective of Meihy (1996), based on interviews carried out with
people who experienced this electrification process. In addition, we also used photographs and
private documents from local residents. In theoretical terms, we will discuss the concepts of
modernization (Monteiro, 2012), urbanization (Bresciani, 2014) and (Benevolo,1995) and the
country-city relationship (Williams, 1990).
