Resumen:
The project “Icó and Its Charms: the stories behind the princess of the backlands” was an action developed at the Padre José Alves de Macêdo Full-Time High School, in the city of Icó, by a group of students and a teacher, the starting from the need to develop a project with the local community in the Core of Work, Research and Social Practice discipline. This monographic work arises from this project, having as its main objective the discussion of the importance of Heritage education within the teaching of history based on educational policies. Heritage education has proven to be an important methodology when it comes to preserving cultural heritage, thus, using formal education, which is already a space for exchanging knowledge, the project's actions were designed to bring art, culture and discuss about the need to preserve local heritage. For this, a quantitative and qualitative approach was used based on the Freirean perspective of dialogue and empowerment of subjects. Application of questionnaires and development of actions (conversation circle, rhyme battle, exhibition) and use of social media (@icoeseusencantos) were the project's flagships. The actions were carried out in 4 schools in the city, with audiences of different ages, and schools with different teaching modalities. Through the questionnaires it was observed that there is a lack of knowledge about local heritage. The actions outlined in each teaching environment aimed to (re)knowledge the city's cultural spaces, seeking to awaken the feeling of belonging and through this the search for the preservation of identity roots. It is concluded that there is a need to continue promoting heritage education actions in the city of Icó, using educational spaces as an important precursor to the exchange of knowledge, enabling the construction of a more active society in its social, cultural and historical space.
