Resumen:
The syntax is a linguistic theory that studies the relationships among the terms of a
sentence of natural languages. The primary purpose of this theory is for maintaining the
intelligibility of language. Knowing that, the present study aims to present the syntactic
functions performed by the noun syntagma within the descriptive syntax. On the
assumption that the noun syntagma is a sense builder whose syntactic structure requires
organization to give a sense. It is possible through the composition of its elements, which
is determined from its nucleus, a key of identity of that syntagma. Moreover, we support
the idea of the syntagma identity also be indicated by markings that point the syntactic
functions. Therefore, we based our work regarding to Perini (2010) analyses, without
disregarding other looks, such as Almeida (2005), Sautchut (2010) and Borba (1970). It is
a bibliographic research, because it was done based on theoretical studies already widely
discussed among theorists and researchers. Firstly, it was done a bibliographic search, and
from that, it was done some reading, essays and summaries of the main ideas contained on
this reflection. The article is divided into three main parts: the first one denominated syntax
fundamentals. In addition we carry on a search regarding to the relevance and the object of
study of the syntax. It was present the structure of phrasal organization. Secondly, the noun
syntagma was present, according to the descriptive syntax and its structure. Additionally, it
was drawn a brief relationship among terms of normative grammar. Thirdly, we presented
the syntactic functions of noun syntagma, and their behaves and function on the sentence.
Finally, we conclude that the noun syntagma may exercise a function of subject, direct
object and prepositional complement. This research was based on studies and experiences
as a monitor student of Portuguese Syntax I.
