Resumo:
Family farming is essential for the subsistence of many families and for the local economy in
the semi-arid northeast. This study aims to work on the perspective of Agrarian Geography,
having as its central object of study the subsistence family farming coexisting with the
semi-arid northeastern climate practiced in the Jatobá de São Miguel community, in the
municipality of Aurora - Ceará.In conducting this research, the objective was to show the
reality of family farming in the community and how it manages to resist and persist against
the setbacks encountered in the semi-arid climate. Additionally, it shows the reality of
governmental neglect and unpreparedness towards family farming. This work presents the
lack of public policies and investments for family farming in the national context and in the
reality of the Jatobá site. It also presents the disparity between family farming and Brazilian
agribusiness.During the course of this research, it was found that there were almost no data
related to family farming in the municipality of Aurora, let alone the Jatobá community. This
may happen intentionally, as family and/or subsistence farming goes against the current
capitalist system, here represented by the notorious agribusiness. In view of this,
geographic-based research contributes to the survey and processing of data, which are of
paramount importance for this practice, because it is only from them that public policies are
formulated and implemented. Furthermore, this research allowed to understand the reality and
the perspectives and challenges encountered by the practice of subsistence family farming in
the Jatobá site.
