The decrease in the insulation levels of the extra-high voltage devices, due to economic and constructive factors, led to the use of lightning rods as overvoltage limiters. These overvoltages cause long-term currents which, at extra-high voltage levels, heat demand for lightning currents more intensely than atmospheric impulses. To simulate these lightning conditions, tests were then run to verify their ability to flow currents of this nature equivalent to T or PI models of the various sections of a transmission line. This work studies the possibility and the conditions to adapt the exponential current impulse generator of the High Voltage Laboratory of the UFPB, as a generator of long-term current impulse: based on the test test parameters of discharge of transmission lines of IEC 99.1 / 1970. A long-term current pulse generator is designed with the use of a computer and its performance is evaluated with linear and non-linear load according to the standard criteria and compared with the long- recently acquired by the University.
