Abstract:
The wood is one of the least known construction materials, in Brazil, and
mostly the ones avaialable in the northeast area(NE) of the country. The knowledge of
the technological properties of these woods is nevertheless basic for its utilization as
construction material. The wood usualy known in the northeast as sabiá -
Caesalpiniaefolia Benth, is both native and reforestation species, very special because of
their properties and a availability in the NE, particulaly in Ceará state. The study of the
proprieties of a few wooden species of NE already tested in the Techonological Institute
of Pernambuco(ITEPE), in Recife (PE) will be discussed. The properties of sabiá wood
being tested, at the Laboratory of Wood and of Wooden Structures(LAMEN), will be
analyzed in order to present the adequate qualities of this wood for wooden structures and
for house construction.
