Abstract:
The environmental issues are not dissociated from the social context. It is imperative to
consider the societal, political, and cultural influences on individuals to understand why they
interact with their natural surroundings in specific ways. The primary goal of this monograph is
to identify the main types of environmental degradation along the riverbanks of the Riachão
Stream in the Riachão District of Pombal - PB. Furthermore, a soil utilization analysis will be
conducted, along with an examination of the social impacts on the local population, to achieve
this milestone. The methodology employed consisted of four main stages: literature review,
cartographic analysis, field research, and final report writing. This final stage identified
economic activities along the stream banks and underscored the social and economic
purposes of land use in this area, as well as the types of environmental degradation occurring
on the banks of the watercourse. Therefore, recognizing the shift in the relationship between
this community and its environment, particularly the evolving role of the farmer, who is not
solely responsible for all environmental issues due to unequal public policies and cultural
influences.
