Abstract

When man sistematically went on using the firewood all along his evolution, such use was not followed by as effective resforesting program. This caused damages for the entire ecosystem that underwent deforestation. The goal of this work is to evolution the use of such alternative energy source in the “Borborema” region and to study the most utilized species, the areas where deforestation occurred as well as its consequences for the region. The first data for this research were provided by IBAMA, and subsequently by the main firewood - consumer industries. Finally, some information were also obtained at the locations where deforestation occurred. Results showed that consumption reached 55.719 m3 of firewood in 1996, with no relevant changes in the preceding years. There are areas of deforestation all along the state. A native the called “algaroba”, among others (denoting all the wood from the deforesting areas) are the main species. The major consequence of such deforestation is the desertification process in the region.
