Resumo:
Given its condition as a fundamental element of reality, space permeates different spheres of human life: through Architecture, it is thoroughly planned, manipulated and organized in a concrete way; in Literature, the “idea” of space simulates reality as it’s based on it. Guided by the main goal of exploring the intersections between Architecture, Landscape and Literature — a connection that naturally arise from the nature of “space” — this bachelor’s thesis develops three different studies guided by Jane Austen’s stories: two studies of historical nature — first concerning British Georgian country manors, then about 18th-century English landscape gardens — and a last study concerning the spatial arrangement of Barton Cottage, from “Sense and Sensibility”. The resulting analyses demonstrated the potential of Literature as both a driving force and a support for potential research in Theory and History of Architecture, while also highlighting the capacity of architectural knowledge to enable new spatial perceptions during reading.
