Abstract:
This research aims to reflect on the discourse on women who are victims of gender-based
violence on social networks. What kind of female image is created in the virtual world? Does
the patriarchal model of the gender order permeate this social imaginary about female victims
of gender violence? Does the virtual space enhance misogynistic manifestations? We will try
to answer these questions. Methodologically, we will dissect, problematize and categorize the
discourses published about some cases of femicide or attempted femicide in the following cities
in Paraíba: Bananeiras, Bonito de Santa Fé, Conde, Monteiro and Nova Floresta. The results
showed that in the minds of social media users, especially men, women are largely responsible
for the violence they suffer, as they don't “obey” social gender norms and venture into a
dangerous world. Thus, it is clear that even in the face of so many transformations in the gender
order, women are still expected to behave in certain ways that serve to endorse the patriarchal
logic of society.
