The present work deals with the determination of the specific area of powders of lateritic soils, materials frequently used in engineering works, but little known in terms of intrinsic properties and engineering. The importance of this research stems from the influence of the parameter studied in relation to stabilizations
of soils with cement, lime, fly ash, asphalt emulsions and other products, where chemical reactions on the free surfaces of the additive and soil particles, their "activity", depends fundamentally on the specific area.
The objective of the research, therefore, is the knowledge of the specific area of the fine fraction of the lateritic soils through the methods of B.E., Blaine permeameter, Fischer permeameter, methylene blue adsorption and sedimentation granulometric method. In this last method the average diameters of Mellor, Geometric and Arithmetic were used. The materials used are eleven samples of lateritic soils from the States of Maranhão, Piauí and Paraíba. In the final part of the work there is a statistical study aiming at ending the interdependence of the above mentioned
attempt to replace sophisticated and expensive methods such as
or B.E.T. by simpler ones.
