Resumen:
Accelerated urbanization leads to a series of negative impacts on the environment, as more
people move to urban areas in search of economic opportunities and better living conditions.
Considering that these impacts directly affect the quality of life and well-being of the
population, it becomes essential to manage and plan sustainable urban spaces. Therefore, the
objective of this research was to analyze the legal frameworks related to environmental
management in the municipality of Pombal-PB, verifying their effectiveness in promoting
environmental health. To this end, the following methodological steps were carried out: data
collection and information in public and accessible sources, such as governmental databases,
institutional websites, annual reports, and official documents; characterization of the
municipality9s environmental management; and calculation of the Local Environmental
Management Index (IGAL) and the Environmental Health Index (ISA). Based on the
determined results, it was found that the municipality has a favorable structure to develop and
optimize local environmental management, with the existence of specific bodies to deal with
environmental issues, as well as normative resources and management tools aimed at preserving
the environment. The result of the Local Environmental Management Index classified the
municipality in the medium level class of implementation of environmental management
instruments, moreover the resulting value of the Environmental Health Index fell into the class
of medium healthiness. Areas with potential for improvement were also identified, as well as
local environmental weaknesses. Therefore, the results obtained in this research can be a tool
to establish mechanisms for analysis, planning, and monitoring of urban sustainability,
positively influencing the decisions and environmental management policies of the
municipality of Pombal-PB.
