Resumo:
Food allergies (AA) in adults are characterized as adverse reactions mediated by the
immune system in response to the consumption of certain foods by sensitive
individuals, resulting in significant impairment of the quality of life of these individuals
with allergies. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of food
allergies on the quality of life of adults, providing clarifications to improve diagnosis,
treatment and support for this population. This is an integrative review drawn from
research in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), Google Scholar and EBSCOHost
databases through the articulation of descriptors from DeCS/MeSH and Boolean
operators. The results demonstrated that foods such as milk, eggs, peanuts, seafood
and wheat are frequently associated with allergic reactions, impacting individuals'
quality of life, compromising physical, emotional and social aspects. Still, this study
discusses therapeutic approaches, such as the use of antihistamines and
management strategies, including patient education and prevention of allergen
consumption, which are fundamental to the control of AA. Therefore, the complexity of
food allergy and its implications for the lives of adults is highlighted, highlighting the
need to carry out more studies and the importance of appropriate management
strategies to promote the quality of life of this portion of the population.
