Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the memories and social and emotional experiences of the residents
of Flores, which took place in the space that corresponded to the Cine Íris in Nova Floresta,
Curimatáu, Paraíba, from 1959 to 1989. We are interested in understanding how the specific
sociabilities attributed to this important cinematic space occurred, from the meetings, walks,
flirting and courtships that took place on the sidewalk of the cinema, to the certain highly
successful film projections that were shown inside the Cine Íris, in addition to their influence
on the ways of acting and behaving of its spectators. Based on Pesavento's (2017) concept of
sensitive cities, we find the need to understand several complex issues, especially those peculiar
to this and other spaces intended for the practice of leisure in Nova Floresta during the period
studied. Urban transformations and modern devices such as cinema appear as common objects
in the history and daily life of most cities. However, it is the historian's primary role and the
objective of this study, as it gave rise to this process of operation of Cine Íris, as a space for
leisure and entertainment and the changes in the daily lives of the city dwellers who frequented
the space, and how these city dwellers saw, felt and what they said about cinema, through their
memories, and contribution from the oral source, based on the perspectives and primary
contributions of Alberti (2005), to history. The work also aims to understand how the arrival of
cinema in a city of the past, which differed in many aspects from the current one, was conceived,
its persistence was felt and the habit of frequenting this space for leisure and socializing was
managed. In this way, we analyze cinema based on the conception of Certeau (1998), in which
individuals often invent new uses for an imposed place, thus adapting their own path.
