Resumen:
This research seeks to analyze the actions of two civil society organizations (CSO) in the high
backlands of Paraíba: the Pisada do Sertão Cultural Association, located in the city of Poço de
José de Moura-PB, and the Florescer Institute of Art and Culture, in the city of Triunfo-PB,
between the years 2022 and 2023. The category of analysis of this work is the territory of the
upper backlands of Paraíba, and from this spatial and temporal perspective, we sought to
analyze how these two CSO develop social activities within the territory, through partnerships
with the other two sectors of society, as well as with other social organizations of the third
sector. Analyzing the work of these two organizations is an important step towards
understanding the socio-spatial dynamics of the backlands population, as the backlands of
Paraíba have social, climatic, cultural and economic characteristics that distinguish them from
other regions. This study has an analytical, correlational and qualitative approach. Through data
analysis, mapping and field research with the application of questionnaires and interviews, we
sought to spatialize the activities of the two organizations and thus analyze the entire process
of territorial development. In this research it was possible to analyze the formative process of
these two CSO, their challenges and partnerships, as well as understand the social dynamics
developed within the upper backlands. The central themes addressed in this study are: the
process of territorial development, the role of civil society organizations and the social
vulnerability of the territories. All of these themes help to understand the social, economic and
cultural dynamics of the high backlands of Paraíba.
