Uma análise da tradução do humor em legendas do filme “Os Pinguins de Madagascar”.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the strategies and translation choices of the translator in subtitling humor in the film “Penguins of Madagascar” (2014), produced by DreamWorks Animation and directed by Simon J. Smith and Eric Darnell. The film tells the story of Captain Kowalski, Rico, and Private, penguins who join the North Wind task force to stop Dave from carrying out his revenge plan to eradicate all the penguins in the world. Thus, the research seeks to identify the challenges faced in Audiovisual Translation and to recognize subtitling as a means of accessibility for diverse audiences. For this, selected scenes were analyzed to determine whether the translator was able to preserve the humor of the original dialogue. This analysis was grounded in a critical and theoretical perspective, supported by authors such as Araújo (2016), Díaz-Cintas (2001), Sátiro (2016), Rosas (2002), Lessa (2006), Chiaro (2010), and Vandaele (2019), among others. Through this study, it was found that humor does not always prevail in subtitle translation, as expressions, cultural references, or puns may not have equivalents in the target language. However, the work done on the analyzed subtitles was deemed satisfactory, as it took into account the Brazilian audience and their understanding of the translated subtitles.
