Resumo:
Several pieces of information gathered through official documents and statistical reports from the Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG) suggest that a considerable number of members of the academic community, in various categories (students, professors, staff, external researchers), do not use or are unaware of the variety of services offered by the UFCG Central Library. This underutilization of the university library, which, according to Anzolin and Corrêa (2008), plays the role of mediator in the production of knowledge, hinders the efficiency of research and impacts the formatting of academic papers. In addition to the hypothesis put forward by the authors, by disregarding the library as an important pedagogical facility for the execution of the curriculum, the education of students is harmed. Thus, this study aims to contribute to a restructuring of the library model as a pedagogical facility, based on the perception of student readers at UFCG. With this, we sought to identify, through the perception of students, the causes and possible solutions for the low use of these services by students. To this end, the deductive method (Lakatos; Marconi, 2003) will be used, with an empirical approach (Gil, 2008) to validate the hypothesis raised. The following research strategies were used: bibliographic review, documentary research and field research (Martins; Theóphilo, 2007). The result achieved made it possible to verify that new reading habits, location and mode of access, as well as the ease of consumption of texts in digital format may have been reasons for the low use of library services that use a traditional model. Thus, it was possible to establish guidelines for the construction of an action plan to restructure the library model in order to fulfill its function as a pedagogical instrument and improve interaction and involvement with the academic community.
