High efficiency source coupling into single mode optical fibers.

Abstract

Coapling efficiency between a laser diode and a single mode fiber can be highly increased bv using a chemicallv etched self-centred microlens on the end of the fiber. A gain by a factor of 4 over butt coupling has been obtained. A simple model, according to classical Gaussian optics theory, has been used to explain the results.
