Resumo:
This research addressed the contributions that Physical Education provides for the
child‟s development and how pedagogues and physical education teachers perceive
these effects within the discipline, with the aim of understanding the perception of the
pedagogues in the Initial Years of Elementary School and physical education
teachers regarding the importance of the subject in the development process of
students in the Initial Years of Elementary School. The theoretical foundation was
built to support the research, in addition to providing learning about human
development and how Physical Education is presented in the National Common
Curricular Base. The research was designed and structured qualitatively, using a
questionnaire to collect the necessary data to understand the teachers' views and
opinions on how the discipline contributed to child development and who should
teach these classes, with eight participants, consisting of five pedagogues and four
physical education teachers, since one teacher holds degrees in both fields, divided
across two schools in a city in the high backlands of Paraíba. The data collected
were analyzed qualitatively, in line with the nature of the research. Through the
analysis, it was concluded that the pedagogues in the Initial Years of Elementary
School had a less in-depth understanding of the terms compared to the physical
education professionals, but they recognized the importance of the subject for the
child‟s development and showed a significant perspective on the benefits of the
discipline. All research participants unanimously responded that the physical
education professional should be responsible for teaching the subject in the Initial
Years of Elementary School, given that their training includes the motor, cognitive,
affective, social, and moral aspects necessary for intentional action in lesson
planning and execution, even though their presence is optional at this stage of
schooling.
