One of the major concerns of all sectors of society is the sharp production of garbage and the lack of adequate destination has compromised natural resources, with marked consequences on the soil-plant-atmosphere system. On the other hand, there is an understanding on the part of society that the product cycle does not need to be completed after use and disposal, but that they can return to the production chain through recycling and reuse. This work presents a proposal for the implementation of a Solid Waste Management Plan at the Center for the Sustainable Development of the Semi-Arid Zone located in the municipality of Sumé- PB, Federal University of Campina Grande. The analysis was based on a bibliographical study and, afterwards, basically a survey, in diagnosis and prognosis, aiming to analyze the current reality of the CDSA solid waste management system. Information was collected through interviews with professionals from the waste management departments of the institution, to obtain an overview on the generation, use and disposal of waste, as well as the application of questionnaires, photographs, such as on-site investigations of activities and sources of waste.
The results obtained generated a picture of the problem in the current waste management and served to justify and elaborate the proposed Management Plan, which presents suggestions for the implementation of all stages, involving from its disposal and management forms to its destination final, and also directing the actions for the selective collection and training with the responsible employees, as the continued practice of the PGRS activities. It was verified that even having as principle the sustainability the Campus does not have actions that look for the sustainability in its three spheres and the verified actions are fruits of particular initiatives of few sectors.
