Abstract

In order to evaluate and generate public policies to ascertain the correct use of low land areas it is of paramount importance to know how well is the present status and the land use, as well as the available water and its potential use and how all interact and are affect by land and water management. A holistic approach was developed to characterize part of the watershed of Piracicaba River based on aerial photographs, physic-hydrological, eco-biological information of agro and forest exploitation and other uses. Detailed studies were carried out in a pilot area to establish a pattern and used it as a reference in the methodology. The results showed that the methodology is appropriate and efficient in identifying most of the necessary traits and to evaluate the causes on the ecological impacts of different activities and to recommend actions to mitigating and improving the present situation of the watershed.
