Resumen:
The indiscriminate use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as
dipyrone, ibuprofen and paracetamol has raised public health concerns due to potential
risks associated with their inappropriate administration. These drugs are widely used
for pain relief, fever control and inflammation reduction, but high and indiscriminate
consumption can lead to significant adverse effects, including gastrointestinal,
cardiovascular and renal complications. Dipyrone, although rare in gastrointestinal
effects, is banned in several countries due to the risk of agranulocytosis. Paracetamol,
known for its hepatotoxicity in high doses, is an important cause of acute liver failure.
Ibuprofen is associated with gastrointestinal and cardiovascular complications. This
study investigated the consumption profile of dipyrone, ibuprofen and paracetamol in
a private community pharmacy in Cuité-PB, focusing on understanding patterns of use
and self-medication practices. A descriptive, observational, and exploratory approach
was used to collect quantitative and qualitative data on the demand and dispensing of
these medications throughout 2023. The results showed high sales of the medications
in question; the most prevalent consumption was dipyrone (n=3,225), followed by
paracetamol (n=601) and ibuprofen (n=378), with the highest number of dispensings
in the first half of the year. The most sought-after pharmaceutical forms were tablets
and capsules, and similar medications had the greatest share in sales. The findings
highlight the need for more rigorous monitoring and the promotion of rational use of
medications. Finally, education and adequate guidance by health professionals are
essential to ensure the safety of NSAIDs and minimize the risks associated with self-
medication practices and indiscriminate use.
