Resumo:
The trajectory of women in the pursuit of freedom, equality, and political participation is a
historical struggle marked by the desire for recognition and respect in society. For centuries,
the social model confined women to the domestic sphere, excluding them from political
decision-making and public life. The general objective of this study is to analyze female
participation in politics in the municipality of Monteiro, Cariri Paraibano, in order to identify
the challenges faced and the opportunities for redefining political and social spaces for women.
The specific objectives are: to identify the main challenges and barriers faced by women in the
municipality's political sphere; to examine how these obstacles impact their effective
participation in public office; and to assess whether public policies and initiatives exist to
promote women's political engagement. Methodologically, this research is characterized as
descriptive and exploratory, with a qualitative approach, based on bibliographic and
documentary references. Additionally, it includes a case study conducted in Monteiro, Paraíba.
The study results show that female political participation at the local level still faces structural
barriers, such as resistance from veteran politicians, structural machismo, and difficulties in
accessing resources. Despite these challenges, women who manage to establish themselves
demonstrate high managerial capacity, particularly in areas such as health, education, and social
policies. The unequal distribution of party resources and gender-based political violence also
represent significant obstacles. It is concluded that gender quotas, as public policies, while
representing progress, still lack effective oversight. Therefore, it is essential to implement
policies that ensure equity and strengthen institutional support for women in politics.
