Pegada hídricas dos discentes do curso de engenharia de biossistemas: um estudo de caso.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the water footprint of the students of the Biosystems Engineering course of the Federal University of Campina Grande in the city of Sumé, PB located in the semiarid region of Paraíba. The methodology used to determine the water footprint was the mathematical calculation tool proposed by Hoekstra et al. (2005) available on the Water Footprint Network website, from individual questionnaires applied to 98 students. The results indicated that the sum of the total water footprint of the students was 1,715,010.20 liters of water consumed per year, with an average of 4,689.66 liters/day, lower than the Brazilian average of 5.553.425 liters/day, and higher than the average of the state of Paraíba that is of 2,180.82 liters/day. It is concluded that although it results in a favorable value below the national average, it is necessary to think sustainably so that this value is reduced so that actions are sought so that this value is lowered even further, since the group of students lives in one of the regions that most suffer from water scarcity problems in Brazil.
