Resumen:
The desertification process is an adversity that affects different parts of the globe, demanding
prevention and combat measures, in which school education plays an important role. Therefore,
the objective of this research was to analyze how the phenomenon of desertification is addressed
in the contents of Geography textbooks of elementary schools in the state and municipal public
schools of Picuí-PB. The research was carried out through a bibliographic survey on the subject;
analysis of three (03) textbooks from the PNLD 202032024 of the Moderna Plus collection,
used in high school, and four (04) elementary school books (final years) from the Scipione
publisher from the PNLD 202432027 of the municipal network of Picuí-PB, in addition to the
production of an educational booklet on desertification and its environmental vulnerabilities.
The results indicate that textbooks treat the issue of desertification superficially, without
adequately delving into the problem, and do not address the regional reality of students, who
live with the desertification process in their daily lives. The booklet highlighted the main
activities that drive the desertification process in the municipality, emphasizing that plant
extraction, agriculture and mining practices are the main factors responsible for the
advancement of this phenomenon. It is concluded that textbooks do not address the issue of
desertification in a satisfactory manner and that human activities are the main drivers of the
desertification process in Picuí-PB.
