Resumo:
Pursuing taking in pieces the material culture founded in inventories from the 19th century in
Cajazeiras, PB this essay intend to study the relation between individuals, objects and space,
perceiving the space such as place which receives manners irradiated by historical individuals
and the artefacts possessed by them, trying to understand how this artefacts molds individuals
and vice versa. Intending to look into the relation between material culture and the behaviour
from the components of the household, pursuing to comprehend the way a materialiazed culture
could impact the funcionality and the behaviour of this family components. This research
attempt as well to articulate the historical context of the Imperial Brazil, the province of
Parahyba do Norte and the Parahyba backwoods, seeking new habits, consuming goods, plans
of a education based on the foreign knowledge and in the practice of good habits based on
civility manuals. To it this research resorted to some historical sources such as the Almanak do
Estado da Paraíba (1889), census between 1872-1890 and Coleção de Leis Provinciais (1835
1899), they brought insights about education and primary instruction, codes of conduct
speaking about higiene and public health in the province of Parahyba as well. Lastly this essay
seeks to observe gender roles and the sexual use of the material culture belonging to the local
elite by articulating historical documentations.
