Abstract:
Candidiasisis a common opportunisticinfectionoccurring in the oral cavity. There are several
Candida species that are part of the man microbiota and can be found in the oropharynx,
mouth, bronchial secretions, folds of skin and vagina. The biological activity of propolis is
attributed to substances derived from plants harvested for their production. Although this
product is from animal origin, some chemical compounds of propolis are derived from
botanical source used by the bees, particularly those with biological action. Therefore, this
study aimed to identify which is the action of propolis on microorganisms present in the oral
cavity, from the analysis of scientific production; a profile of oral health of patients seen in
the dental office of the Family Health Strategy in São Bento-PB and its relation to
susceptibility to oral candidiasis; identify the species of Candida and evaluate the antifungal
activity of propolis, against yeasts of the oral cavity. There was a systematic literature review,
the integrative type, in response to the first objective; to the achievement of other goals, made
an exploratory research with quantitative approach, whose sample consisted of 152 patients
treated at the dental office of ESF in São Bento-PB, saliva was collected with the aid of a
swab, identification of Candida species was by CromCandida Agar. The extract of propolis
from bee Apismellifera, originated from Dalbergiaecastophylum. The antifigic action of the
extract was analyzed in four concentrations to 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. In processing the
data, the statistical package for social sciences (Statistical Package for Social Sciences -
SPSS) was used, version 17. For analysis using descriptive statistics, and as a measure of
central tendency average; and applying the Chi-square (X?) test, observing the values of the
standard deviation (SD) and confidence interval (CI) in order to obtain the correlation
between variables. In compliance with Resolution 466/12, the research was approved by the
Federal University of Campina Grande Research Ethics Committee (UFCG / CFP), CAAEÉE
37184414.5.0000.5575 protocol. According to the results, it was necessary to research that
studies with systematic reviews and randomized clinical studies with humans, as they were
considered the greatest strength of evidence are carried out, so that one can have, more
precisely, the action of propolis on microorganisms of the oral cavity; was found that the
habits and oral hygiene conditions were poor, the predominant sex was female, the positivity
for Candida the most prevalent species were C. albicans was also observed that the lower the
concentration of propolis are the best halos inhibition.
