Résumé:
The purpose of this work is to describe women's role in the rural labour force in the
state of Parafba, northeastern Brazil, from 1960 to 1991 in the lignt of the agricultural
modernization that has taken place during this period. The present research was based
on the analysis and interpretation of data made available by the IBGE (Brasilian
Institute of Ecography and Statistic) census. A critical study was conducted in view of
the neglectfulness with which in view such data has been treated. Moreover, significant
chauges have occurred as a result of a decrease in women's participation in farming
activities due to the modernization process that has been happening in the rural area. We
this can be traced back to the influence of the employment sector (tertiary sector) that
brongnt abont an invuase in women EAP (economically active population).
