Abstract:
The metals in spite of being natural components of the environment, when present
in high concentrations, represent risks to the health. Actually, researches have been developed with the
purpose of retention of liquid and solid effluents. An alternative process is the sortion. Materials of
biological origin as the biosorbents have the capacity to adsorb and/or to absorb metallic ions. Among
these materials, are the woven of vegetables (peel, pulp, seed) that also present the capacity to accumulate
heavy metals. Considering the sortion properties of the organic solid residues, a system of vertical
columns was set up with fixed beds of equal volumes of Organic Solid Residue (OSR) originating from
the Empresa Paraibana de Alimentos e Serviços Agrícolas - EMPASA. In those columns solutions of
chloride of chrome hexahydrated were passed, prepared with concentration of 50 mg L-1. The analysis of
the effluent solutions collected at each 12 days during a period of 60 days, was done through
specterphotometry of atomic absorption. The analysis of the results of this work showed that the OSR has
good capacity in the sortion of chrome.
