Abstract:
The study of genre is a fleld very analyzed in Brazil, with varied possibilities for
questioning. The relationship between wife and feminine reading, discussion studied in
this monograph that uses historical source the magazine “Jornal das Moças” (1914-
1965). This periodical published in Rio de Janeiro was distributed in major Brazilian
cities and addressed topics such as fashion, beauty, movies and marriage — in order to
entertain the readers, but also instruct them through their beauty and behavior advice.
This discourse in the magazine was in line with the State, the Church and the Legal
Discourse produced for middle class women of the years 1930. These ideas, in turn,
were traces of what the State has drawn up for the hygienist: a maternal woman,
youthful appearance and caucasian, and with a tendency to marriage. This mode is
intended to discuss the discourses of the magazine “Jornal das Moças” during the 1930
about gender education, questioning the female identities. Before entering the study,
will be analyzed the construction of woman-mother in Brazil by State hygienist and the
woman-mother of the years 1930. The magazine inserts within this context of
distraction and instruction, conveying a subtle feminine behavior pattem or directly by
the content posted. The survey was conducted through the study of the issue of
(directing, cover, diagramming, sections) and some content such as short stories,
advertisements, beauty advice and maternal care. And this study is operationalized
through the analysis of the discourses of the magazine “Jornal das Moças” about
motherhood as a place for women; the problematization of hygienists on the female
body requirements contained in advertisements and beauty tips, reflecting gender
differentiation and the discussion of the stories present in “Jornal das Moças” reflecting
the feminine identity as representation of modem conjugality. The theoreticalmethodological
assumptions were based on Michel Foucault (1979), from his
propositions about the concepts of discourse and norm, Joan Scott (1989) to discuss the
idea of genre and Tomas T. da Silva (2009) in his discussion of the concepts of identity.
