Abstract:
Aging is part of the natural process of human beings and is influenced by multiple factors, including physiological, psychological and social aspects. As the population ages, there is evidence that some types of pathology or physical condition occur in the elderly, one of the diseases observed is malnutrition. This work deals with a study of nutritional intervention in elderly people from an ILPI (Long-Term Care Institutions for the Elderly) in a municipality in Curimataú Paraibano. All elderly people living in the institution participated in the study, and were evaluated before and after the nutritional intervention with high-calorie and high-protein supplementation. The nutritional status of the elderly participants in the research was evaluated through the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), consisting of 18 questions, followed by two stages, the first stage being the screening and the second stage the global assessment. After the diagnosis was made in the studied population, they underwent a 150-day nutritional intervention and, subsequently, after 150 days, the analyses were repeated in order to compare the data and verify the effectiveness of the intervention in the nutritional status. Finally, the study is of utmost importance for maintaining and improving the quality of life of institutionalized elderly people and possible improvements in their nutritional status and prevention.
