Résumé:
This work presents, as its final product, a didactic guide aimed at supporting Sociology
teachers across Brazil4especially those teaching the Sociology curriculum
component without formal higher education or continuing training in Social Sciences.
The work is divided into two main sections: the theoretical framework and the teaching
guide. In the theoretical framework, we draw on Young’s (2010) concept of "powerful
knowledge" and Florestan Fernandes' five universal functions for Sociology teaching.
Fernandes' theory (1954) advocated for social inclusion and the educational
development of Brazil’s poorest social classes. We also consider the influence of Karl
Mannheim on Fernandes’ ideas, recognizing Fernandes as one of the foremost
proponents of Sociology as a scientific tool for guiding social change. Additionally, we
discuss the Brazilian educational legislation that regulates the teaching of Sociology in
basic education. The didactic guide consists of five lessons, providing teachers with
methodological resources and approaches designed to help high school students
engage with key sociological concepts and theories. The guide draws on Roberto
DaMatta’s book O que faz brasil, Brasil and explores representations of social relations
in Brazilian literature, particularly through the works of Machado de Assis and Lima
Barreto. We hope these lessons will serve as a foundation and inspiration for the
planning of further Sociology classes.
