Abstract:
The polymeric foams have gained enough market space due to good mechanical properties, coupled with low density and low cost. However, its use in higher value applications, which require specific properties, has stimulated the studies of new formulations of blends based on EVA with elastomers to obtain expandable compounds. Elasticity and resilience can be modified with the addition of small amounts of elastomer in the formulation of EVA foam. Thus, the incorporation of elastomers is an alternative to the development of new products that meet market requirements. The technology for manufacture of foams, which is currently used industrially, is suitable for the main
applications. However, there is limited availability of studies to assess and make correlations of the formulation of the compound and the types of processing with the structure and properties of EVA foam. This work aims the development of new formulations of EVA foams with the addition of elastomers to improve processing and properties, which are required for new applications of this product. The results of the physical and mechanical properties showed that the EPDM has a strong influence on the degree of crosslinking of the foam, directly influencing the properties and processing parameters. This was observed by rheological study, evaluation of mechanical properties and morphological analyses.
