Abstract:
The present study had as object of investigation the reading of the students of a school of the 5th year in
the city of Aparecida PB. The specific objectives were: to investigate students'
understanding of reading; diagnose the level of reading of 5th year students; to identify
students' progress in reading during the course of the research. The methodological
procedures adopted for data collection were: first a bibliographical survey through
printed materials of the Internet search; In the second phase, the field research was
carried out at a school in the municipal network of the city of Aparecida PB, from
March 8 to April 20, 2018. The data collection instruments used for this research were
the focus group and participant observation. The subjects of the research were 05
students of elementary school I. Content analysis was carried out from a qualitative
approach. This study showed that efficient pedagogical mediation based on theories is a
determining factor for students' learning to be realized. However, it is necessary that this
mediation be planned, with methodologies directed to the integral development of the
student. The methodological experiences made during the participant observation
allowed us to confirm that diversified activities contribute in an effective way in
improving students' performance in what concerns the acquisition of written code. Such
performance is also improved by frequent contact with various reading practices. In
addition, it is concluded that it is necessary to intensify the reading practices in the
classrooms, through the appropriate mediation of the teacher, since, this act provides the
student with the development of formal language and, consequently, their creativity and
ability to position themselves on various issues, as well as the liberation of social
barriers that prevent it from entering into society.
