Cidade e campo no brejo paraibano: um olhar sociológico sobre Lagoa Seca.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the relation between the countryside and town as well as the rural and urban areas situated in Lagoa Seca, a small town in the Brejo Paraibano whose economic support depends on the production developed by the families working in the farms. Out of 23,000, the current population of Lagoa Seca, 15,475 inhabitants live in the rural area accounting for 67,4% of its total population. Most of them are farm workers who don't depend exclusively upon agriculture as an economic support. Most people live in the urban area but are connected with the countryside for crops as another way to help in the family budget. On the other hand, the farming producers also do some jobs different from those they have in the country . They often go to Campina Grande to do business and other services concerning education, health care, arts, entertainment etc. The link of the rural population with Lagoa Seca and the one of its total population with Campina Grande has made us consider this relation between the country and town. The emphasis given to this matter is of a binomium not antagonistically but complementarily focused and of an interaction whose "continuum" relation benefits both of them.
