Résumé:
Frei Damião de Bozzano is a figure of the Northeastern Catholicism that left deep marks in the
daily life of the sertanejo people. He had traveled through states, delivered speeches, made
prophecies, and dragged crowds wherever he went. The figure of a "Saint Northeast", attributed
to him by the people, caused speeches and speeches to be organized about his missionary
actions. Of this agency of speeches what most stands out is the one of Cordel. In this form of
popular literature can be observed the production of religious and moralistic discourses
referring to popular speeches and circumstantial sayings of past or present events, and that bring
in their bulge practices related to the "said and unsaid" about Frei Damião. The objective of this
study is to analyze from the perspective of Cultural History the cordelísticas narratives that have
accentuated emphasis in the passages and sermons of Frei Damião, in his wanderings by the
northeastern states. In this way we seek to understand how these narrative elements already
mentioned appear in cordel literature and even more, as they contribute to the construction and
discursive propagation on the Frei.
