Resumen:
This work deals with a relevant study about the university expansion in Brazil from the
years 2002, correlating with a case study on the Extension Program Tutorial - PET of the
Center for Sustainable Development of the Semiarid. The central axes of the work are
about the internalization of the campuses and also how this public policy can impact the
local society. In a broader approach, it is investigated, as the CDSA PET, fruit of this
process of internalization, contributes to the process of social transformation in that
region. This research is justified by the need to elaborate an in-depth analysis on the
subject, since there are few studies on these issues, especially CDSA and PET. For this,
the methods that were used to develop this article started from a case study, with
quantitative and qualitative bibliographic research, of descriptive character, comprising
the period from 2002 to 2018. The main points registered in the work are the economic
and social impacts that the construction of higher education centers brings to the regions
where they were installed and how the university extension models, even in a specific
way, a more citizen society, refuting in many cases the common sense that the university
does not promote the transforming results. Finally, the paper presents, in a succinct way,
all the pillars in relation to university expansion, correlating these analyzes with the
actions developed in the PET / CDSA, center of a policy of university expansion.
