Abstract:
This work problematizes the relations of power established by Manoel Baptista de Moraes, commonly known as Antônio Silvino, and his group in Cariri, Paraíba.
Specifically, this research aimed to: first, study the politics of the beginning of the
First Republic of Para, to situate how the oligarchies that were represented in the
state scenario gave support to the agrarian system based on the latifundio and the
exploitation of the peasantry workers, so we located some authors which discuss the
cangaço phenomenon as part of this historical process; second, to analyze Silvino
trying to perceive the records that deal with his emergence as a subject who revolted
with the social condition imposed on him and seeking to identify his political relations
established among the agrarian elites of the Northeastern sertões; and, finally, to
perceive the passages of this cangaceiro by Cariri paraibano highlighting its main
political feats and conflicts. We seek a theoretical contribution in Social History
centered on historical materialism from the authors E. P Thompson and James C.
Scott that have brought us important lessons to study the universe of peasant
resistance. Data collection was done through consultation with a general
bibliography, as well as through several direct sources: string literature, regional
literature, criminal cases, newspapers, photographic images, testimonies and
biographies. The studies made it possible to understand the various tensions and
conflicts between Antônio Silvino and the authorities or people of the Cariri Paraíba
as part of a complex network of power relations that guaranteed a process of
resistance in that peasant world where agrarian and political elites sought all costs
become hegemonic.
