Introduction: The aging of the world population is occurring because of low birth rates and mortality and increased life expectancy. This change requires a reformulation of public policies so that they can ensure the elderly as well as longer life expectancy , also the quality of aging, which is at present a great challenge for developing countries. The elderly have particular characteristics and needs that require a different view . Among these features we can highlight the use and alcohol abuse in this population, consisting of a serious public health problem because it allows the appearance and / or condition of diseases, especially chronic degenerative because they are the most common in old age. Objective: To investigate the risk for alcohol use and abuse in the elderly in the community; Identify the factors associated with alcohol use and abuse in the elderly ; Assess the health conditions of elderly people who abuse alcohol ; To characterize the sociodemographic profile of the study participants. Method: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative approach study. The survey was conducted in the city of Santa Cruz-PB and was to sample 126 elderly enrolled at UBH João Ivani Saudanha. In this research were used three instruments, these being the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) a demographic questionnaire and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test - Geriatric Version (MAST-G). Data were analyzed in light of descriptive statistics and scientific statistical. The study complied with all ethical and scientific requirements of Resolution 466/12. Results: The sample mostly consisted of elderly in the range of 60-69 years, mean education only 2 years of study, where (40.6%) are illiterate, retired (81.4%) and married (61 , 7%). Regarding the abuse of alcohol 20 (16.0%) elderly respond to 5 (five) or more answers "YES" during application of MAST-G instrument, therefore, indicative of problems. Of these 20 (100%) elderly abuse victims of alcohol, 15 (75.0%) are disease carriers and 14 (93.3%) reported using medication daily. Furthermore, it was observed that alcohol consumption was associated with age in men younger and older. Low socioeconomic status were associated with alcohol use, suggesting that socio-demographic inequalities can be decisive in the prevalence of substance. Conclusion: The results show that the use of alcohol in old age, proves relevant and deserves greater attention from health professionals, as even less frequently / quantity, such use may entail several negative consequences that stage of life.
