he final disposal of solid wastes is a difficult problem, which in most cases when misplaced puts the environment, the professionals, and the surrounding population in situations of risk. Thus, the objective of this work was to characterize the negative impacts caused to waste pickers and residents of the area of final disposal of solid waste in the Municipality of Sumé, in the Western Cariri of Paraíba. Data collection was carried out through visits to the landfill and the works department, to collect data on the specifications of the municipal landfill project, and through the application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with waste pickers and residents. environment. In the analysis of the collected data, the quantitative methodology was chosen in conjunction with the qualitative one, through the generation of Excel 2010® software charts and tables and descriptive analysis of the key actors' statements. As far as the social actors of the research are predominantly male, the ages of the informants ranged from 30 to 71 years, 90% of the surrounding inhabitants and 40% of the natural scavengers of Sumé and the rest of the surrounding cities. 40% of the total universe of both collectors and residents are declared illiterate and none of them finished high school, 60% of the residents are farmers, and 100% of landfill workers are scavengers, all started this work more than 10 years and all claim to understand the social and environmental role they play. 21.43% of the residents of the surrounding area feel uncomfortable with the burning of the garbage, 21.43% said they have been affected by disease problems, 19.21% said that the water that flows from the embankment in times of rain enters the dams of rural properties. When analyzing the physical structure foreseen in the landfill project and what currently exists in it, it can be seen that only 16.6% of the total items listed in the project were met in terms of the structural organization of a new work environment that should to benefit the activity of the collectors.
