Resumo:
The present research was carried out in the Alto Alegre neighborhood in the municipality of Sumé in Cariri Paraibano. The research aims to highlight the history / memory of Alto Alegre, as well as the process of stigmatization of its residents, a factor of social exclusion of black people in the municipality of Sumé. We point out the importance of research to show each person who lives in the neighborhood how much we have good memories of our ancestors, that is, to make visible the forgotten stories, the fruit of the social processes of exclusion and also to show where we belong. The methodology used for this study was ethnography based on participant observation. The categories of analysis we worked on were the memory, identity / belonging and stigma. The memories of each elderly person as well as of middle age, residents of the district of Alto Alegre are our material of work. To move with these memories has become a political challenge because the confrontation with racism and the production of the stigmas that segregate and exclude everyday must be perceived by the Social Sciences as a relevant object.
