Abstract

This work analyzes the sociohistorical process of formation and organization of the rubber gatherers in the town of Novo Aripuana. The central focus of this study are the relations in the extration of latex, the first deals with relations within the traditional rubber plantation, which are not based on a monetary system of payment, but rather on a sistem of credit for obtainning material goods, and the subsequent breaking away from this economic struture. The second part deals with foundation and organization of the riverbank rubber-producing communities based on innovative relation as an alternative to the traditional rubber plantations, with a casa study in the Sao Felix community. In our analysis of the historic and social formation of the rubber gathers, we seek to discern how the workers went from "bondage" to "free"or autonomous, within the limits of the riverbank communities, also observing relation ships with nature and with society in general.
