Resumo:
The purpose of this study is to discuss possibilities of use of iconographic sources in the
seventh year textbooks of fundamental level II, understanding them as a form of language for
History teaching and for the verification of the contents learning by the students who use the
textbooks in their daily lives. From our experiences in Basic Education, it is understood that
History teaching is still based on the use of few methodological resources in the classroom.
Therefore, the use of images in the classroom by students makes this discipline, in practical
terms, an absorption of knowledge beyond reading the written text. The research was based
on Debret’s study of images, aiming to contribute to the educational historiographic debate,
insofar as the sources studied can provide new explanations regarding the specific contents of
History in textbooks, also making it possible to understand the current dynamics of education
and its future perspectives. Therefore, the iconographic source has an effective and plausible
utility, much more than a mere illustration, it becomes properly a methodological resource to
be interpreted for understanding History. To refer to our discussion, we use authors such as
Circe Bitencourt, Marlene Grillo, José Barros de Assunção, Manoel Ivan, Fonseca, Vanessa
de Lima, Litz, Selbach among others.
