Resumo:
This work has the purpose of analyzing the Federal Inspection of Works against Droughts
(IFOCS) and its performance in structuring the District of São Gonçalo - PB. Or the temporal cut
This research comprises the years between 1909 and 1945, despite using current
district, as a comparison of before and today. My working hypothesis is that the
IFOCS was crucial for the birth and development of the São Gonçalo District. For
and to enrich the topic under debate I made a brief presentation of the Northeast and its
Gilberto Freyre, Djacir Menezes, Durval Muniz and Mariana Moreira.
These authors presented in the first chapter the different ways of seeing and conceptualizing the
Northeast. They opened up a range of possibilities to understand this vast territory
by the droughts. In the following chapter I presented the origin of the term IFOCS, its idealizers and
their initial actions that would generate means to mitigate the effects of the drought in the Hinterland. At the
third and last chapter are the works built by IFOCS that still generate their
benefits, some have lost their acting strengths over time. During reading it will be
impacts of the federal agency in the district of São Gonçalo, some of its
construction in the São Gonçalo District and its strategies to combat droughts to the
1945. In this case I mentioned the Public Treasury, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, the
Apartments, Guest House, Telephone Post Office, Buildings of the Agronomic Institute and
Users of the Public Water, the Soil Laboratories, Rua 16, the Catholic Church and the
School Estevam Marinho. All these works represent the living spaces of the
gonçalenses and the basis of this research.
