Resumen:
The present study addresses the Municipal Participation Fund (MPF) as its theme, and its relevance as the primary source of financial support for local government. More specifically, the objective of this study was to analyze the degree of dependence of the municipalities of the Paraíba Western Cariri Region between 2014 and 2017 (first semester) in relation to the volume of intragovernmental resources passed through the MPF to the respective municipalities. As justification, the theme was selected because it is a pioneering research, within a unique local reality, marked by being a region formed by its majority of relatively new municipalities, with few population and low index of private economic activity. As methodology the work is a descriptive, quantitative-qualitative research whose method of approach is analytical comparative. In an analytical way, it was noticed that the municipalities most dependent on the MPF resources are those with a lower population totality, a reduced private productive performance, and a geographical position outside the main commercial routes of the region. On the other hand, the less dependent municipalities have inverted situations, that is, they usually present larger populations, more diversified economic sectors and spatial favor.
