Abstract

This study analyses the work O cortico fl890), by Aluisio Azevedo, a novel which portrays urban scenes where fight Brazilian (white man, negroes and cross-bred) and Portugueses, some in the condition of explores, many in the of villains, livings creature of a collective habitation. The proposal is to study as i f it projects, in the work, the relation character, race and environment, as well as the social relations under the deterministic optics, one of the characteristics of Naturalism. The novel interlaces the stories of the residents of the tenement Sao Romao, among them the Portuguese Jeronimo, an exemplary worker who goes to few succumbing to nature of Brazil, symbolized for the half-cast Rita Baiana. O cortico is a figure that represents more than a collectivity, it represents the entire country.
