The agricultural practice requires management techniques, but for the most part is inadequate, allowing the installation of degradation processes. The poor practices of cultivation can destroy in a few years, a layer of inches of topsoil that nature took millions of years to form. The lack of information about the consequences of misuse of the Brazilian soils has contributed to degrade them and to destroy them. This study aims to understand the process of land degradation in the community of Timbauba / Sao Jose do Peixe, arising from the use of inappropriate farming techniques such as fires, use a row crop, use of chemicals out of the box, overgrazing and absence of fallow land. This type of management has caused the removal of vegetation and soil, drop in agricultural production, reduction of community income and aggravation of social and economic conditions of local people. For a better understanding of the environmental degradation it was necessary to characterize the physical and biological processes, raise the historical use and occupation of the area, identify the types of crops exploited and cultivation techniques used, and finally discusses the main problems agricultural practices developed with the current framework of environmental deterioration. Accordingly, we used the qualitative and quantitative method, in which involved survey and mapping, field research, collecting primary and secondary data, and analysis and interpretation. The results led to believe that the natural dynamics of the area, driven by the conditions of semiaridez, combined with inadequate management is responsible for the current scenario of degradation.
