This paper discusses the soil resource base that supports all the vegetation cover and carries increasest ecosystem functions to the environmental balance and the maintenance of life on the planet. The relationship of human beings with the ground back the history of Agriculture and is studied by Ethnopedology. The research, a case study aimed to verify the perception of family farmers in the Rural Community Pitombeira, municipality of Sume, Paraiba Cariri on the ground: quality, fertility, use and conservation practices. The research was divided in two stages, the bibliographical research and the field research. The bibliographical research was constituted in the collection of the references for the theoretical foundation. Data related to the topic were collected from the library and the internet. In the field research a case study was carried out, with data collection from the application of questionnaires, which aims to describe the characteristics of the farmers their opinions, attitudes and visions about the soil. The results indicate that farmers associate soil quality and soil fertility for agricultural production and productivity of crops, show the perception of the Caatinga climate problems emerging from the popular imagination of the harsh environment and do not associate the land use of the Caatinga biome. The dialogue is fundamental to understanding the vision of farmers, assisting in the process of interaction in order to allow more approach to the research. It is considered that knowledge ethnopedological should permeate the activities of the construction of agro-ecological knowledge and conservation of soil, promoting discussion of the empirical knowledge and scientific knowledge and participatory and dialogical methodologies should be encouraged in diagnostic work and perception, especially when you want to reduce the impacts to natural resources and encourage the adoption of conservation practices.
