Resumo:
The present work discusses and analyzes aspects of the initial modernization of the
city of Crato, located in south of Ceará, until the early 1930s. We considering the
progressive mentality in vogue in the late nineteenth century to the subsequent, as well
as unique features found in this city. We emphasize in this study the discursive practice
around the drought, which is an important factor both in the construction of identity of
natives of Ceará as to acquire resources from Central Government to supposedly
reduce the effects caused by the drought. Another point to accentuate is the formation
of the Concentration Camp in Buriti, where we seek out to look such a government
invested with criticism, considering political, social and local culture features. For this
research, we analyzed works written by members of the Cultural Institute of Cariri
(ICC), which is dedicated to construction an image for the city of Crato, as well as an
identity for its people; photographs, articles in newspaper and commemorative
magazines, blogs, interviews and papers of experts. These were the instruments for
investigation and analysis used in the search for give our version about this story. Our
theoretical knowledge is based on authors as Michel Foucault, Roger Chartier, Michel
de Certeau, Kathryn Woodward, among others.
